The PF - Family Protection system is a system integrated in the Information System of Social Security
(SISS) of the Portuguese Government. The technology is base in Java, J2EE, SOAP, web services and
Oracle Data Bases. The PF - Family Protection system provides monthly maintenance of more than
1.700.000 benefits. Is one of the biggest IT systems of Portugal Social Security.
The PF - Family Protection system manages the allocation, maintenance and payment of the following
types of benefits:
Child Benefit;
Scholarship;
Prenatal allowance;
Bonus Deficiency;
Special Education;
Monthly lifetime;
Assistance to the Third Person;
Grant Home.

Activities and responsabilities

Management the all project in a National scale. Receive the new functional requisites, definition with
the client the IT proposals and the respective budget and milestones. Definition of the Information
Architecture needed for the implementation the changes and new laws for the PF - Family Protection
integrated in the Information System of Social Security (SISS).
Data analyse every month, to validate de monthly payments of family allowance. Produce statistic data
of how many benefits are paid, with types and the amounts spent each month.
Analysis of the client needs and information involved in the changes of new laws defined and updated
the requirements (Use Case and Business Rules) of PF - Family Protection project. The java developers
then implement the new functional requisites, software adaptations and changes.
In the Software Architect, the main task is definition the software architecture of all java components
and that same architecture specifications will be followed by all programmers in the project. It also
carries out technical support and mentoring. Code and best practice audits.

software adaptations and changes.
In the Software Architect, the main task was define the software architecture of all java components
and ensure the same architecture specifications will be followed by all programmers in the project. It

The Information System of Social Security (SISS) was started developed in 2000. The first system that
Nelson Pereira started as Java Analyst/Programmer was the IdQ Identification and Qualification.
This system unified in one single and National data base the information. This base informations were
from all Portuguese citizen and enterprise and the type of relation they have (or had) with Social
Security.

The main activities were requirement analysis, modelling in UML (building the use cases and business
rules) and implementation/programming the client side (Swing/AWT) and the server side (EJBs,
